Proudly representing the capital of Alberta, the city of Edmonton is located on the North Saskatchewan River and is the centre of the Edmonton Metropolitan Region. Edmonton is Canada’s northernmost city and has a large population of just under one million residents. The city is divided into 375 neighbourhoods within 7 geographic sectors, including a mature area sector consisting of neighbourhoods that were built prior to 1970 and 6 surrounding suburban sectors. Edmonton’s central core encompasses the downtown area and surrounding main streets, as well as the University of Alberta.
The city of Edmonton is a hub for the oil and gas industry, but is also well-known for its research and technology industries. A number of attractions make Edmonton a desirable city for both tourism, and living. It is the home to the largest mall in America, the West Edmonton Mall, as well as Fort Edmonton Park, the Royal Alberta Museum, the Devonian Botanic Garden and the Trans Canada Trail. In terms of healthcare, there are four main hospitals serving the residents of Edmonton as well as several smaller hospitals scattered around the large city. The Edmonton Transit Service provides efficient and affordable public transportation around the city with community buses and light rail transit.
