The City of Winnipeg is the capital of Manitoba and the largest city in the province. Winnipeg was formed where the Assiniboine and Red River meet. Historically it was known as a trading hub during the early years of Canada’s development and once the railway came through it was a transshipment hub.
As with all major cities it is broken down into various areas and communities. At the center or heart of the city is the downtown core which locals refer to simply as Downtown. To the south are the areas of River Heights, Fort Garry and St. Vital. To the East is Transcona and St. Boniface. To the west is Assiniboine South and St. James – Assiniboia. To the North you will find the areas of Point Douglas, Inkster, Seven Oaks and River East.
In the west end of town you will find the Assiniboine Zoo, which is currently upgrading all of their facilities as part of a 200 Million dollar grant over 10 years to elevate to a world class standard. If you find yourself in the north end you may want to take some time to visit the Kildonan Park which has manicured paths and various wonderful gardens.
