Orleans — a great place to call home

Orleans is a suburb located in the east end of Ottawa, along the Ottawa River about 16 km from the downtown core. The area has a significant francophone minority, which has been declining in the recent decades. Some of the main neighbourhoods in the region include Avalon, Chapel Hill, Chatelaine Village, Convent Glen, Eastridge, Queenswood Village and River Walk. A number of French elementary and high schools are located in these neighbourhoods, making Orleans a popular area for French-speaking families. The main commercial district in Orleans is the Place d'Orleans Shopping Centre, conveniently located just off highway 417 and easily accessible from many east-end neighbourhoods. A number of recreational facilities are also scattered around the area, including the Bob MacQuarrie Recreation Complex, The Ray Friel Recreational Complex, and the Shenkman Arts Centre.

The primarily outdoor attraction in Orleans is the parkland of Petrie Island, home to a large beach and numerous nature trails to explore. Petrie Island is also home to turtles in some of its sheltered lagoons, as well as a nature centre for learning about the local environment. Several medical centres are also located in the area, with the closest hospital being the Montfort Hospital, in the Gloucester region of Ottawa. OC Transpo has several bus routes running through the Orleans area, conveniently taking passengers to all corners of the city.
