What affects the cost?
Location is the biggest driver. A one-bedroom suite in Toronto costs roughly 50–70% more than an equivalent suite in a smaller Ontario city. Urban homes typically have higher operating costs, larger staffing budgets, and more amenity programming.
Care services are charged separately from accommodation at most retirement homes. The RHRA requires homes to offer a defined set of care services, but pricing for those services is set by each operator. A minimal care package (medication management only) might add a few hundred dollars per month; full personal care assistance can add $1,500–$3,500 or more.
Memory care units are physically secured and staffed by workers with dementia-specific training. They command a significant premium — typically $1,000–$2,500/month above a standard care package.
What's usually includedin the base rate: three daily meals and snacks, weekly housekeeping and laundry, utilities, programming and activities, and 24-hour emergency response. Ask each home specifically what is and isn't included.
